After a lengthy presentation by staff at an Oct. 21 study session, city council directed the public works department to begin the possible purchase of New River Water Utility.
NRWU has the water franchise area north of Union Hills Drive at 83rd Avenue, an area that covers 1.75 square miles. A majority of the area is the Fletcher Heights development.
City Manager Carl Swenson said the utility company owner approached the city "some time ago" about the possibility of the city purchasing the company. At that time, council directed staff to contact users and ask how they felt about switching to city water service.
Public Works Director Bill Mattingly introduced his deputy director, Mike Webber, who set forth the actions that have been taken since the directive.
Webber said there are approximately 2,900 connections within the NRWU franchise area, and the city already provides sewer and curbside trash pick-up. City staff attended the meeting April 17 held by Fletcher Heights Condo Owners Association. The meeting was held to let homeowners know about the possibility they could be part of the city system in the future.
